A Family Space Adventure
Oct 1 – Nov 1, 2026
Unioninkatu 29, 00170 Helsinki
Join us this October for a fun-filled family adventure featuring art, space-themed questions and activities!
Throughout October, families can explore Helios, the spectacular artwork by British artist Luke Jerram, through a series of engaging activities. Helios is a highly detailed scale model of the Sun, presented at approximately 1:200 million scale. The artwork measures seven metres in diameter, with each centimetre representing 2,000 kilometres of the Sun’s surface. Thanks to Helios, visitors can examine the surface of our nearest star up close. The imagery is based on 400,000 photographs of the Sun and incorporates observations collected by NASA.
During this family-friendly space adventure, you will have the chance to marvel at the giant Sun, answer space-themed questions, and take part in creative activities inspired by space exploration. The adventure can be completed in two ways: a shorter version at Helsinki Cathedral only, or a longer route that takes explorers from Helsinki Cathedral to the Old Church.
The Space Adventure is available throughout October, and you may complete it at any time that suits you. However, visits are recommended during the opening hours of the Cathedral Crypt, as some of the activities are located there. The Crypt is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. If you wish to visit the interior of the Old Church as part of the longer adventure, please complete the adventure between Tuesday and Friday from 12:00 to 15:00.
The Space Adventure is designed for the whole family, although children below school age are recommended to take part together with an adult.
