Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen: Wild at Birth

Jul 11, 2026 | 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Galleria Loisti

Vaasankatu 15, 00500 Helsinki

The exhibition features hand-tufted rugs by Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen in which familiar figures from Pre-Raphaelite paintings are covered in hair resembling animal fur.

The works explore beauty ideals, the power of the gaze, and the role of the model in art. In addition to the rugs, the exhibition also includes ceramic works.

The Pre-Raphaelites continue to shape the understanding of beauty. In art history, a human is hairless from chin down, and smoothness remains a mainstream beauty ideal in the 2020s.

Mechanically hand-tufted using 1970s equipment, Korolainen’s rugs are connected to the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement founded by William Morris. Each piece is created through a slow, labour-intensive process, stitch by stitch.
