Designed for seniors, HopeaCiné’s programme features new Finnish films once a month.
Each screening invites filmmakers or film experts as guests, who will discuss the filmmaking process and offer fresh insights to deepen the viewing experience after the film.
The events of the film Lapland War are set in Lapland in the autumn of 1944, during the conflict between Finland and Germany towards the end of the Second World War.
Heikki, a young private, is fighting on the Karelian Isthmus alongside his friend Pauli. The company is joined by Arvo, who has been released from prison and whose worldview challenges the others’ perceptions of war and duty. A ceasefire raises hopes of a return home, but it soon becomes clear that Finland must turn against its former German allies in Lapland.
Meanwhile, in Rovaniemi, Saara, who works as an interpreter for the Germans, is forced to choose her future: whether to stay in Finland or to flee to Germany with her beloved, Major Duisberg.
Lapland War is a story that focuses heavily on the human experiences of its characters, depicting people who find themselves caught up in the midst of a historic upheaval. Amidst the horrors of war, they seek meaning, humanity and forgiveness – and ask how mercy could be found in a merciless environment.
