W. A. Mozart: Requiem – Utopia 25 Years

Bernhardinkatu 4, 00130 Helsinki

In Mozart’s Requiem, anger meets consolation and fear finds peace. More than 200 years after the composer’s death, it remains a work that invites reflection and stillness.

In the early nineteenth century, a rare arrangement of the Requiem was created for the cathedral of Évora in Portugal, scored for a small ensemble of soloists, choir, organ, and instrumentalists. This version will now be heard in Finland for the first time.

The intimate ensemble brings this familiar masterpiece closer to the listener. Beneath the arches of the German Church, the Requiem is not a distant monument. Every voice and every word emerges with clarity, revealing colours and details that can be lost within the sound of a large orchestra.

The Requiem will be performed by Utopia Chamber Choir together with a distinguished group of musicians.

The soloists are Titta Lampela, soprano, Iris Oja, alto, Charles Barbier, tenor, and Jussi Lehtipuu, bass. At the organ is early music specialist Andrew Lawrence-King.

The ensemble also features bassoonists Otto Virtanen and Jaakko Luoma, cellist Heidi Peltoniemi, and double bassist Eero Marttila.

Utopia’s 25th anniversary concert. One evening. Finnish premiere.
