Happy
Pets.
Happy.
Helsinki.
Helsinki isn’t just the happiest capital in the world for humans – here, even our four-legged residents and visitors live their best lives.
In August 2025, more than 1,000 dogs took part in the launch of The Doggy Route to Happiness – the world’s first walking tour created just for dogs. While the big launch weekend is now a wag-worthy memory, many of its highlights remain for you and your canine companion to enjoy year-round.
Whether you’re a local, visiting for work, or relocating to Finland’s capital, Helsinki offers an abundance of dog-friendly adventures, green spaces, and a warm welcome for pets.
The Doggy Route to Happiness
In August 2025, Helsinki hosted a truly unique canine experience: The Doggy Route to Happiness, a free, self-guided walking trail designed for dogs and their owners. Held on August 8–9, the route launched from Café Regatta, passed through a paw-friendly rendition of the Sibelius Monument, and ended at the beloved Rajasaari dog park (dog island), complete with water and treat stations, scenic info signs, and a professional dog photoshoot on August 9.

A canine-sized tribute to the iconic Sibelius Monument, designed by the late sculptor Eila Hiltunen, created from sticks collected by Neris, Helsinki’s most famous rescue dog.
Café Dogatta
A “pup-up” café next to the beloved seaside Café Regatta, where treats come in both human and canine varieties. Dogatta remains near Café Regatta for furry friends to enjoy.
Rajasaari Dog Island
A 24/7/365 dog paradise with beaches, forest trails, and swimming spots, all with a view of the President’s residence.

Why pets love Helsinki
Free public transport
Pets travel free on Helsinki city public transportation —just make sure dogs are leashed.
Dog parks & urban nature
The city boasts around 88 official dog parks, from forested hideaways like Uutela and Vallilanlaakso to island escapes like Rajasaari—offering trails, beaches, and off-leash joy
Pet-inclusive spaces
Many grocery stores, cafés, and even malls welcome pets—some with dog carts for shopping ease. Pharmacies let pets in too; only liquor stores restrict to guide dogs.
Pet-friendly community
Enjoy doggy ice cream (like sugar-free gelato at Jädelino), pup social hours at cafés and bars, pet Pilates classes, and library “reading dogs” that help children (and adults) relax through companionship
