One of the best-known names in the Italian Baroque is Antonio Vivaldi, a Venetian violinist and composer whose music spread throughout Europe during the composer's lifetime. Vivaldi's concertos were also inspiration for composers who never visited Italian soil themselves, such as Johann Sebastian Bach.
Countless composers from northern Europe went to Italy to work and study, one of them being Bach’s peer Georg Friedrich Händel. The years spent in Rome and the Italian music centers left an indelible mark on the music of this German composer, and later in London Händel made a brilliant career especifically as a master of Italian opera. The cantata Armida abbandonata (Abandoned Armida) heard in this concert is from the Roman years of Händel in the early 18th century.
