Opening of Aleksanterinkatu Christmas Street 2017
One of the oldest Christmas traditions in Finland gets underway again in Senate Square on 26 November at 1pm.
The Christmas season traditionally begins in Helsinki with the opening of the Christmas Street, which takes place this year on Sunday 26 November. The opening ceremonies include the eagerly anticipated switching on of the Christmas lights along Aleksanterinkatu. The event begins at 2pm at Senate Square with a charity market where visitors can find Christmas treats, such as Christmas porridge, mulled wine and pastries. Santa Claus will arrive at Senate Square aboard a historic tram and switch on the Christmas lights at 4 pm. After that a Christmas Parade will proceed along the streets Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie and Pohjoisesplanadi, where visitors will have the chance to see Santa and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.
