A New Adventure for the Carr Family
What happens when a family says ‘yes’ to a whole new life in Helsinki? The Carr family found out the key to the perfectly imperfect work-life balance Helsinki style.
Meet the Carr family. Sean and Ladi Carr joined the 90 Day Finn Program, looking for professional development and a family-friendly lifestyle. Sean from the United States and Ladi from the Czech Republic – they came with a want for a break from their demanding careers in academia, eager to experience Finland’s unique life-work balance.
Their son, Sebastian, wasn’t sure about the move at first. Moving away from friends is never easy. But soon, he was won over by the adventure. Within a week at his new Finnish school, he’d already made friends. The Carr family’s journey shows how a little change can lead to big adventures.
“I wasn’t sure about it at first. But after a week in school, I already had friends.”

At first, adjusting to the time zone difference was tough, but the rewards of Finland’s lifestyle quickly became clear. Through the 90 Day Finn Program, the Carrs really got to know the local way of life. From saunas and lakeside swims to berry picking and mushroom foraging, they experienced Helsinki the way it’s meant to be enjoyed—outdoors. City bike rides, park picnics, ferry trips, and even summer ice cream kiosks became family favourites.
“Helsinki is such an outdoor city! We biked, relaxed in parks, enjoyed ferry rides, and, of course, indulged in summer ice cream.”
-Ladi

Why Helsinki is Perfect for Families
Here’s why Helsinki stands out as the happiest city in the world—and why, after the programme, the Carr family decided to stay in Finland:
Space to Feel Safe
Although Finnish society is among the safest in the world. In Finland, safety isn’t just about low crime rates—it’s baked into everyday life, giving families the freedom to explore without a second thought. Finnish society places a strong emphasis on trust and independence. Parents can feel secure letting their children walk or bike to school, visit friends, or explore their neighborhoods without constant worry. For families, this sense of security translates into peace of mind, knowing that their children are free to experience the world around them while being safe. Helsinki’s dedication to safety extends to public spaces, transportation, and even emergency services.
Live Well, Together
Finland is a place where families can truly make the most of life. As the happiest country in the world, it offers a lifestyle that prioritizes well-being and balance. With the cost of living 8.8% lower than in the U.S, families can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without stretching their budget. From affordable housing to free healthcare for children, Finland’s support systems allow families to focus on what really matters: spending quality time together. Whether it’s enjoying the outdoors, exploring new hobbies, or simply relaxing at home, Finland provides the perfect setting for families to live well and thrive.
Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom
In Finland, education is about more than just academics—it’s about learning through life and connecting with the culture. Kids here grow up in a system that values curiosity, creativity, and the joy of discovery. With small class sizes and a strong emphasis on equality, every child gets the attention they need to thrive. Life-long learning is considered a fundamental right in Finland. From the classroom to real-world experiences, children are supported in both academic and personal growth, making Finland the perfect place to learn, grow, and explore.
Equality in Every Step of Life
Finnish society believes that everyone deserves equal opportunities to succeed, and this belief runs through every aspect of life. Parents share responsibility for childcare and household duties equally, and workplaces offer flexible hours and family-friendly policies. Finland’s education system also ensures that boys and girls have equal access to opportunities, regardless of their background. For families, this freedom to be equal means a society where everyone is valued, and every child has the same opportunities for success, regardless of gender or socioeconomic status.
Adventure On Your Doorstep
In Finland, nature isn’t just something to look at—it’s something to experience. With the cleanest air in the world, and stunning landscapes right on your doorstep, every day is an opportunity for adventure. Picture yourself gliding through snowy trails on skis in winter, swimming at sun-soaked beaches in summer, or camping beneath the stars in one of Finland’s pristine national parks. From berry-picking under the summer sun to ice fishing on a crisp winter day, Finland offers endless ways for families to embrace the great outdoors together.
Family Fun, All Year Long
Helsinki is a city that invites families to explore, play, and connect. Spend a day at Linnanmäki where the excitement of thrilling rides and fun games brings everyone together.
