Wooden sculpture: The Geographical Center of Helsinki’s Land Area
Koetilantie 5, 00790 Helsinki
The exact geographical center of Helsinki’s land area lies in the middle of the fields at the Viikki Research Farm – along a rural road bordered by forage grass. This grass is used to feed the farm’s 60 cows, which produce around 600,000 liters of milk annually.
Milk from Viikki ends up on many Helsinki breakfast tables, yet few know it originates from the heart of the capital. The fields are not just used for production—they’re part of a broad international research network that seeks solutions for sustainable food production and climate change.
The Viikki farm’s history dates back to the 1500s, when the same land fed Helsinki’s earliest residents. Today, Viikki is a university campus and a major research center. In 2025, a wooden sculpture was erected on the farm’s field to mark the city’s center point—an homage to the region’s agricultural heritage and soil biodiversity.
