The two-day Helsinki puhuu discussion event invites speakers to take the Espa stage on 24–25 August.

What should we be discussing right now, and what should we keep quiet about?

The event features discussions on the security of the Baltic Sea region, culture and politics. Speakers include Piia Elonen, Koko Hubara, Satu Leisko, Tuomo Puumala, Fatim Diarra, Antti Auvinen and Rosa Meriläinen. There will also be musical performances.

This year marks the third time the event has been organised, with a particular focus on language minorities: on Wednesday, 24 August, there will be a discussion on plain language and sign language. The afternoon’s discussions will be signed, and there
will also be poetry readings in sign language.

You can listen to the Helsinki puhuu discussions on stage or streamed live on the Helsinki channel and the hs.fi website. The aim of the event is to provide an open, low-threshold discussion forum on current issues for residents, to promote and increase discussion among citizens and to encourage social engagement. The audience is welcome to send questions and discussion topics in advance to [email protected]

Both days will start with “Questions from all over the world”, where topics and questions sent in by the audience will be discussed, led by Rosa Meriläinen, Managing Director of Kulta ry. Participants include cultural and social influencers as well as politicians.

Event time: Wed–Thu 24–25 Aug, 12 noon–6 p.m.

The event is produced by Savoy Theatre and Cultural Centre Caisa. Other partners and organisers include Kulta ry, the Finnish Critics’ Association, Helsingin Sanomat, the Finnish Centre for Easy Language and Ursa Minor.

Updates to the programme are published on the Espa stage website and Facebook page.

The discussions will be available to listen to on the Helsinki channel for two weeks after the event has ended.
