The Sibelius Violin Concerto has been a travelling companion of Hilary Hahn from a very early age, and along the way it has constantly acquired new shades and meanings for her. The Concerto was very much one of Sibelius’s own favourite works, and the result of a long and tortuous process.
It has since become the most recorded Violin Concerto of all time, including that by Hilary Hahn. The most performed Symphony, on the other hand, is Antonín Dvořák’s ninth, born on American soil. Dvořák was inspired by the cities and railways of the “New World”, but also its folk music, which had already spoken to him back home in Bohemia.
