Maija Blåfield: The Fantastic

The Fantastic by Maija Blåfield is an exploration of the relationship between imagination and reality as it manifests in how people encounter the unknown. 

The short film features interviews with former North Koreans, who describe their ideas about the outside world derived from smuggled Western fiction films they have seen. Combining documentary footage with visual effects, the work plays with the interface between experienced reality and belief.

Maija Blåfield (b. 1973) is an award-winning artist and filmmaker based in Helsinki. Her works examine the ambiguity of our experience of reality, often through experimental narrative. The Fantastic (2020) is presented in the media space of the Touch exhibition.
