In Helsinki with kids

Suomenlinna sea fortress is a Unesco World Heritage Site located on the coast of Helsinki, and also a suburb of Helsinki with around 800 residents.

The island of Vallisaari between Santahamina and Suomenlinna opened up to the public in May 2016.

By the Senate Square, in the oldest quarters of the city, lies the Sederholm House, completed in 1757. It is the oldest house in Helsinki, now part of the Helsinki City Museum and belongs to the youngest in the city. The Children's Town is a family favourite where generations meet and learn about the past by doing things together. Play in an 18th century shop, write on a blackboard or examine everyday artefacts in the 1970s grandma's house. At the Helsinki City Museum you'll also find a museum shop and café El Fant.

The Children's Traffic Park has organized traffic education for children since 1958. From autumn to spring the park organizes lessons for kindergarden-groups and for school children (1st-3rd grade). During the summer season the park is open free of charge for everyone over 5 years old.

The Finnish Natural History Museum's exhibitions show the diversity of nature. The "Finnish Nature" exhibition offers a fascinating journey through Finland from the southern coast to the northern fells.The "History of Life" exhibition presents the course of the evolution from the Big Bang to dinosaurs and larger mammals of the Ice Age. Through the exhibition "World Nature" the visitor is taken on an exploration excursion that begins from the polar areas and ends in the tropical warmth. The secrets of the bones are introduced in the exhibition "Story of the Bones". The "Change in the Air" exhibition presents the research on climate change conducted at the University of Helsinki. SkyWheel Helsinki, located in Katajanokka, is a 40-meter high observation wheel that provides a 360° view of Helsinki and its most important surrounding attractions. Possible to also book a VIP-gondola or sauna-gondola.

Allas Sea Pool is a marine spa and an oasis of urban culture right at the heart of the city.

Oodi is Helsinki's new Central Library and a living meeting place in the city centre on the Kansalaistori Square. Oodi is a venue for events, a house of reading and a diverse urban experience. It will provide its users with knowledge, new skills and stories, and will be an easy place to access for learning, story immersion, work and relaxation. Oodi is a library of a new era, a living and functional meeting place open for all.

The Haltiala farm is like a piece of the Finnish countryside. The farm gives visitors an opportunity to acquaint themselves with domestic farm animals. In summer and autumn the animals are outside and can be seen from early morning until late in the evening, at other times they are inside. The sheds are then open mainly Mon-Fri 18-20, Sat-Sun 11-18 (please check opening hours in advance though). In addition to traditional grains, the Haltiala farm cultivates peas and flowers on some fields, and city residents are welcome to pick them for free in July-August. Events during Easter and Christmas. Restaurant-cafe Wanha Pehtoori is situated next to the farm.

Science Centre Heureka is a lively exhibition centre for people of all ages. At Heureka you can experience and learn about science and technology in an exciting hands-on environment. Planetarium, Science restaurant and Heureka Shop. Heureka's exhibitions extend also outdoors in summer season. The Science Park Galilei, the bedrock exhibition, trail of useful plants and the Linnaeus gardens are also included in the general admission fee. Heureka is situated about 20 min. train ride away from Helsinki centre.

At Fallkulla farm, especially popular amongst families with children, it is possible to get aquainted with traditional farm animals: sheep, goats, cows, chicken, ducks, rabbits and horses. Many of the animals are of a traditional stock that is native to Finland. Fallkulla is a youth centre of City of Helsinki.

Annantalo is a building in the centre of Helsinki dedicated to art education and children's culture. Performances, exhibitions and events for children, young people and families together with a versitile course selection. Changing exhibitions take place in the gallery and often also in the glass gables on the second floor and in the café , where it is possible to have a snack or a light lunch.

Experience the adventure in the world of snakes and lizards. See the worlds most poisonous snakes, look into the eyes of giant multimetre snakes. See the giant monitors basking or water turtles swimming and spiders waiting for next meal. Tropicario has the most giantsnake species than any other zoo in the Northern countries.
