7 unmissable things to do in Töölö

If one neighbourhood had to summarise the holistic Helsinki lifestyle: calm, cultured, and close-to-nature, it would be Töölö. Imagine unhurried weekends, flowing between museums, saunas and seaside cafés; good food, and great sports opportunities.

Whether you’re visiting or rediscovering your own backyard, here are 7 unmissable things to do in Töölö.

1: Dive into Töölö’s culture fix

Töölö is culture with capital C. Start at Kunsthalle Helsinki: the 1920s building is a piece of art itself, along its ever-changing exhibitions and talks. Get to know the country’s history at The National Museum (reopening in 2027!), get lost at the fabulous Tram Museum, or study sports heritage at TAHTO, the Cultural Centre of Sports.

If museums don’t move you, let the music do it instead – the Finnish National Opera and Ballet sits at the corner of Töölö Bay.

2.  Stroll around Töölönlahti Bay

Every Helsinkian knows this walk. The path around Töölönlahti Bay is perfect for a lazy loop: you’ll pass by joggers, swans, and many cups of coffee. The bay offers postcard-like views of the city with every turn, squeezing together iconic Töölö attractions, old wooden villas and beautiful nature. In the summer, crab a pastry at the romantic Blue Villas Cafe, stop for a quick workout at the popular outdoor gym, or try paddle boarding. In the winter (if it is cold enough!), you can even walk on the ice and marvel at the beautiful old villas from another angle. Just remember ice safety!

3. Sauna like a local

When in Helsinki, sauna. Most neighbourhoods have their own public saunas that are in frequent use by locals. In Töölö, that’s Rowing Stadium’s Sauna, a rowing stadium’s floating sauna where locals swim all year – yes, even when there’s ice. If you’re only after a quick dip in the sea, right next to it you’ll find a “mattolaituri” (washing dock): a traditional, free-for-all Helsinkian swimming spot. Bring your towel and your best small talk, or don’t (it’s Finland!).

4. Discover Töölö’s design icons

Töölö is a treat for architecture lovers. From the unique Temppeliaukio Church (also called the “rock church”; a UFO-like building carved into rock!) and Alvar Aalto’s Finlandia Hall to the classical Töölö Church and the functionalist Olympic Stadium; Töölö’s attractions wear their heritage proudly. In Töölö, even a casual stroll can turn into a crash course in world-class design.

5. Get sporty where legends play

Töölö isn’t just the city’s heart of culture – it beats sports. The Olympic Stadium, Helsinki Ice Hall, and a classic summer meeting point, Stadikka swimming pool, are all within walking distance. Whether you’re cheering at a hockey game, aqua jogging in a queue of locals, or climbing the Stadium Tower for panoramic views, you’ll learn that in Helsinki, athletic spirit isn’t just a phase; it’s a lifestyle.

6. Töölö yourself down

Need a breather? Don’t worry, Töölö knows how to chill. One of the most wonderful things to do in Töölö is wandering through the Winter Garden: a glasshouse oasis of cacti and palms enjoyed by locals and visitors since 1893. Same goes for walking under pine trees in the peaceful Sibelius Park, where you can marvel at the monument dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Or head to Hietaniemi for a seaside breeze: sunbathe, swim, or pause by the beautiful cemetery, where most Finnish presidents, Tove Jansson and other iconic artists are buried.

7. Eat, sip, and shop local

The world is your oyster – sometimes literally – when it comes to Töölö restaurants. Classics recommended by locals include Cafe Regatta (for seaside coffee), Cafe Korvari (for cinnamon buns), Messenius (for a bohemian lunch), Lehtovaara (for a fancier dinner), Rolling Cheese (for cheese and wine), and Layers (for unique croissants). While you’re at it, check out second-hand stores Kaartinen & Kuusela and Relove.

“Töölö is like a small universe of Helsinki’s best bits.”
