What kind of character would you create if you could design a completely new face? In the World of Masks course, imagination, cultures and hands-on making come together as you design and create your own mask.
The “World of Masks” course explores masks from the perspectives of art, culture, and identity. The course explores how different communities have used masks for celebration, protection, and storytelling, and what they can tell us about ourselves today. Whenever possible, we’ll also take short excursions into Helsinki’s urban environment to search for “hidden faces” and shapes.
In the course, participants will design and create their own masks from start to finish. The process involves sketching, shaping, and making papier-mâché from recycled materials. The finished masks will be painted and finished individually, and you’ll get to take them home at the end of the course. The work emphasizes experimentation, personal expression, and a relaxed approach without pressure to perform.
The course is taught in Finnish and English. The course is led by architect, set designer, and art director Kristiina Leppänen.
The course fee is €290 and can be paid in one or two instalments (September and November). Payment can be made via bank transfer or MobilePay, and detailed payment instructions will be sent after registration.
Registration is binding, and the course fee is non-refundable once the course has begun. The course may be cancelled if there are not enough registrants at least 5 business days before the start date. You will be notified of any cancellation via email.
