Being Social is a three dimensional contemporary family portrait. A sculpture with three lights making three shadows of three different generations. All doing the same thing.

When did quality time with family turn into a collective of social media dependency? Are we living in Plato’s allegory of the cave, preferring the virtual reality? The sculpture is made of social media logos cut in plywood and carefully placed to form three different silhouettes on the walls.

The artwork was made with the support of a working grant from Svenska Kulturfonden. The artwork can be experienced in lights on evenings between 5 and 10 p.m.

Finnish artist Anni Laukka creates artworks out of light and shadow, contemporary issues and materials.

”In my work, materials play an important role. However, the main role in the end has the shadow of the work itself. With the materials I comment the consumption and the consuming life full of measurement and comparison of achievements.

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life we often lose sight of what is essential. Life values are there, but in practice we forget to live by them. We often focus on less important and superficial things, on what we want instead of what we have, and forget what truly matters.

I do not comment the themes of my work from above or outside, but as a fellow human struggling with the same questions,” Laukka explains.
