Outi Tarkiainen’s Midnight Sun Variations seeks out the endless shades of the arctic Midnight Sun. As autumn approaches, the sun gives way to darkness and, symbolically, new life. Tarkiainen composed her work as a pair with Songs of the Ice to be heard later this spring.
The most Russian of the three Symphonies by Sergei Rachmaninov catches the last rays of Late Romanticism and his endless longing for his native country.
The Violin Concerto by György Ligeti is a veritable cornucopia of historical styles, techniques and timbral effects in which the soloist, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, says she discovers something new each time she opens the score.
