FRSO & Sir Mark Elder
A great fan of Finnish music, Sir Mark Elder has conducted several cycles of the complete Sibelius symphonies, but he now sets foot along a less-travelled path. In his symphonic poem Night Ride and Sunrise, Sibelius recalls his youthful trots on horseback through the moonlit wilds. He said The Bard was “something like an ancient Scandinavian ballad from the time of the Vikings.”
Sibelius was of the opinion that Rachmaninov had a good feel for timbre and culture but that he sounded a bit tame. He could clearly not have been referring to Rachmaninov’s irrepressibly sentimental, voluptuous second Symphony in speaking of ‘tame’.
