Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle is like a nightmare recalled on a psychiatrist’s couch. The plot is based on medieval stories of secret rooms and men who kill their wives. The prologue to the opera asks whether the drama about to begin really does take place, or only in our minds.
