Guillaume Connesson’s Céléphaïs takes its name from the imaginary town in the fantasy stories by H.P. Lovecraft. Composed in 2017, it is perfectly suited in the company of works written over a century before, such as Florent Schmitt’s ballet suite La tragédie de Salomé, or Maurice Ravel’s song cycle Scheherazade. Gershwin’s rhapsodic ballet An American in Paris is redolent of his impressions of that city.
