A piano concerto in the mid-19th century was expected to be an entertaining show, but the young Johannes Brahms preferred a stern mental tussle of symphonic proportions. Jean Sibelius wrote Swanwhite for the play of the same name by August Strindberg, a playwright he admired. Till Eulenspiegel is also about a medieval legend; this one played pranks on his stodgy fellow men and officials in an orchestral poem by Richard Strauss.
