Seven decades will have passed this year since he first made his debut on the conductor’s podium. Mahler’s ninth symphony sounds, to subsequent generations, like a farewell, but when he wrote it, he still envisaged a future and ways of breaking the magical nine-symphony curse. It was, however to be his last complete symphony.
