Red Shoes painting workshop

Sörnäisten rantatie 22 / Kaasutehtaankatu 1, 00540 Helsinki

The painted shoes will be used in the installation in World Village Festival 25.-26.5.

Created in 2009 by Mexican artist Elina Chauvet, Red Shoes is an art project consisting of shoes painted red to symbolise the murders and disappearances of women. The installation combines personal experience and a collaborative fight against gender-based violence.

A collective work of art, the installation also includes workshops. The workshops will involve painting shoes and discussing violence against women and gendered violence as a phenomenon. The workshops are intended for everyone wanting to contribute to the installation and that way increase awareness of these topics.

The workshop organisers will speak Finnish, English, Spanish, Italian and French. Participants are hoped to bring at least one pair of shoes to be painted at the workshop, but you can also attend without bringing shoes. The painted shoes will be used in the installation and will not be returned to workshop participants or any other donors.

There will be two workshops: at 15.30–17,00 and 17.30–19.00. Each workshop can be attended by 15 persons. To take part in a workshop, you must register in advance via EventBrite.

The Red Shoes painting workshops will be organised in the Lämpiö space of Tiivistämö, Suvilahti, at Kaasutehtaankatu 1, Helsinki.
