Songs from Ukraine - A concert of Ukrainian art song

Songs from Ukraine - A concert of Ukrainian art song

Ukrainian art songs composed for voice and piano from the romantic period in the late 19th century

The concert program consists of Ukrainian art songs composed by Mykola Lysenko, Kyrylo Stetsenko and Yakiv Stepovyi. Most of the songs are set to poems by Taras Shevchenko, but also other writers will be heard, such as Dniprova Chaika and Lesia Ukrainka. Shevchenko is regarded as the founder of modern Ukrainian literary language, whereas Lysenko is often deemed to be the father of Ukrainian classical music.

The concert is held by a lied duo from Oulu. Ukrainian pianist Tetyana Kushniruk studied at Oulu University of Applied Sciences and currently teaches and regularly performs in the city. The Helsinki born contralto Iida-Marja Kleine’s voice studies at the same school are ongoing.
