Timo Aho: Breathe – Lux Helsinki at Stoa

Turunlinnantie 1, 00900 Helsinki
Stoa

Just like an artificial ventilator, Breathe inflates and deflates steadily in cycles repeating the organ-like movement.

Just like an artificial ventilator, Breathe inflates and deflates steadily in cycles repeating the organ-like movement.

Tied with LED Neon lights and controlled by a relay switch which is connected to an air blower, it is fully dependent on electricity, technology, automation and eventually, the human in control.

The artwork can be experienced in lights in the evenings between 5 and 10 p.m.

Timo Aho works with the methods of sculpture, installation and site-specific art. He uses changing elements such as air, light and sound in his works, as well as materials and aesthetics familiar from popular culture.

His works are often linked to temporality and in them he reflects on the relationship of humankind to a technological society, the environment, beliefs and the phenomena welling from them. By exploring the touchpoint between reality and beliefs, Aho uses subtle gestures to unpack the topics he processes and creates experimental spatial artworks.

Aho has a master’s in fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts and has studied sculpture and environmental art at Glasgow School of Art.
