Vyshyvanka and the Power of the Ukrainian Craftsmanship

Vyshyvanka and the Power of the Ukrainian Craftsmanship

As a tribute to Ukrainian embroidery and craftsmanship, the museum is exhibiting Ukrainian textiles decorated with embroidery from the collections of the National Museum of Finland during the summer.

Vyshyvanka and the Power of Ukrainian Craftsmanship is a tribute to Ukrainian embroidery and craftsmanship as well as the cultural heritage of Ukraine. The National Museum’s summer pop-up exhibition features Ukrainian textiles decorated with embroidery ranging from traditional vyshyvanka shirts to aprons, lace patterns and tablecloths.

The free pop-up exhibition opened on Thursday, 18 May on Vyshyvanka Day, which is celebrated in Ukraine and over a hundred other countries around the world. The tradition of celebrating Vyshyvanka Day on the third Thursday of May started in Ukraine in 2006 on the initiative of students. It became an official holiday in 2015 and has since been adopted by numerous communities and institutions in Ukraine and internationally.
