Think Corner, situated at the heart of the University of Helsinki city center campus, is an open arena of top-notch science. 1. Tiedekulma - Think Corner

Porthania operates as one of the core buildings of the University of Helsinki's city centre campus. It was designed by Aarne Ervi and completed in 1957, using the periods latest building techniques, including concrete elements. 

Porthania is included in the DOCOMOMO-listing as a landmark of Finnish modern architecture.

The Kaisa House functions as the Main Library of Helsinki University. The house has gathered several architectural awards and is a stunning example of modern library architecture. It has an curvilinear brick facade. Architects AOA (2012). There's also a café in the building, WELL Cafe Kaisa-talo.

The National Library of Finland is not just a library, it is also a sight and a cultural destination where exhibitions and cultural events take place. 

4. The National Library of Finland

The Main Building of the university, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, was completed in 1832. It is located next to the Senate Square in the heart of Helsinki's neoclassical centre, facing the Cathedral and the Government's Palace. The Fabianinkatu side was completed in 1937, before the war. The architect was J.S Sirén, who also designed the Parliament House.

Today Helsinki University consists of 11 faculties and almost 40 000 students spread across four different campuses.

5. University of Helsinki, main building

The Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel (1778-1840): Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland. A statue of Alexander II (1894) stands in the middle of the Senate Square. 

Helsinki Cathedral is arguably Finland's most famous and photographed building. The oldest stone building in Helsinki is the Sederholm House located on the southeast corner of the square. Today the building hosts the Helsinki City Museum. The Esplanade park and the Market Square are just a block away.

The Senate Square also hosts a sound installation called the Sound of the Senate Square. It is a modern version of the European glockenspiel and can be heard every day at 17.49 as it travels from one building to the next. The composition runs for 5 minutes 18 seconds and is composed by Harri Viitanen and Jyrki Alakuijala.

6. Senate Square

The Kluuvi district encompasses most of the very centre of downtown Helsinki. The Helsinki Central Station, the big department stores, and many buildings belonging to the University of Helsinki are all found here.
