Caring for & Commoning the Urban Dark

Darkness Library Suomenlinna is a wooden pavilion that gathers and shares residents’ site-specific knowledge of darkness in Suomenlinna. 

Developed within the Caring Commons research project, it explores how creative practices can strengthen human–nature relationships and contribute to sustainability transformation.

It asks: How could a darker Helsinki support the well-being of people, wildlife, and nature? Can darkness be described as site-specific? How do darkness and environment support one another? What emerges in a place because of its darkness?

The research is funded by the Nessling Foundation and conducted by postdoctoral researcher Gloria Lauterbach, NODUS Sustainable Design Research Group at Aalto University. 

The wooden pavilion is built in collaboration with the Department of Architecture, Aalto University.
