MUU Window

Välimerenkatu 15A, 00180 Helsinki

Trajectories explores weaving as queering spatiality. The praxis takes broken cabling and uses self-taught basket weaving techniques to transform a two-dimensional landscape into three-dimensional places.

Deleuze and Guattari refer to weaving as the most striated – or controlled/measured – form of “nomad art” as there is no space to aerate within the confines of a tightly woven square. As described in A Thousand Plateaus (1980), nomad art applies the characteristics of land and space to textile formats.

The sculptures aim to reclaim what is described as a striated and transform it into something smooth or nomadic where it can be permeated, creating cracks where spatial tensions emerge. The materials address a feeling of artificiality in relation to cultural identity as well as an interdependence between digital places, cultural heritage, queerness, and community.

Trajectories refers to nomadic trajectories described by Delueze and Guattari where vectors, such as hurricanes, travel across striated or smooth planes. The works are then observing blurred lines between striated and smooth spatialities, the cracks within them, as well as the vectors that travel through them.
