Sebastian Boulter: FLOW
Oct 22 – Nov 14, 2026
Ala-Malmin tori 1, 00700 Helsinki
Rivers will flood regardless of how much their estuaries are redirected. They will flood regardless how high the embankments are raised. They will flood regardless of built channels. Rivers flood whenever they need to flood. That’s how rivers tend to free themselves out of the harness of humans.
In 2020-2024 Sebastian Boulter did a research on five Greek rivers. They have in common that they all border to or run through sites explored by the German Archaeological Institute at Athens. The rivers are River Eridanos at the Kerameikos in Athens, River Imbrasos at the sanctuary of Hera in Samos, River Alpheios at the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, River Inachos at the Mycenian citadel in Tiryns and River Kephissos at the Kephissos valley in ancient Phokis.
In the exhibition of Flow at Malmitalo Gallery, Boulter presents his oil and watercolor paintings. The paintings depicts not only the rivers’s condition but also some findings from the rivers, which somehow refers to contemporary archaeology.
The exhibition has been supported by The Finnish Arts and Culture Agency.
