72 hours in Töölö

Your perfectly imperfect itinerary for Helsinki’s cultured heart

If you have 72 hours and an appetite for Helsinki’s elegant side (with a dash of sea breeze and a lot of good coffee), Töölö is your place to be. Our perfectly imperfect itinerary series takes you behind the Helsinki postcard: where locals step, swim, and sip their way through the week. Here is your 3 day itinerary for Töölö, filled with culture, architecture, and delicious food.

Day 1: Arrive and ease in

Welcome to Töölö, where everything’s exciting but slow enough for you to notice just how beautiful it is. Just west of central Helsinki, it’s easy to get to by train, tram, bus, foot, or – in summer – a city bike.

Find your feet (and a few landmarks)

Start your visit with a gentle walk through Etu-Töölö. Make sure to stop at Temppeliaukio Church (aka the rock church), a UFO-like building carved into stone. Strolling around is also a great way to discover where to eat in Töölö.

Sip, shop, and snack your way in

Töölö is full of temptation. Grab a pastry, sip a latte, enjoy a lunch (or two) while you get your bearings. Local recommendations: Kahvila Rakastan, Viinikahvila Feeniks, and a very traditional restaurant Messenius.

Soak in the calm streets and beautiful buildings, and stop by popular second-hand boutiques, Kaartinen & Kuusela or Relove, which is also a cozy café .

Steam, swim, and sunset

Skip the fancy dinner tonight and do as the locals do: unwind with a sauna and a dip in the sea. Head to Soutustadionin Sauna, a floating sauna where you can swim year-round and catch stunning sunsets. The perfect Helsinki welcome!

Day 2: Culture and coffee – Töölö style

Töölö is where Helsinki’s cultured side – both past and present – comes alive. Lace up your walking shoes and get ready for a day of architecture, history, and nature (plus caffeine). Here’s what to see in Töölö!

Bay views and Aalto angles

Start with a rustic breakfast at Tin Tin Tango, or grab a takeaway croissant from Layers, then head to Töölönlahti Bay. You’ll pass by the Parliament and find Finlandia Hall, Alvar Aalto’s iconic creation, at the water’s edge. Inside: exhibitions, cafés, and a Finnish design shop that might tempt your wallet.

Palms, pools, and panoramic views

Stroll along Töölö Bay, watching locals (and plenty of birds) go about their day. Pick your favourites out of the many Töölö sights nearby: visit the historical Winter Garden, climb up the Olympic Stadium Tower for sweeping views, visit the Tram Museum for free with kids (or without), or if it’s summer, cool off at the Swimming Stadium (“Stadikka” for Helsinkians), Helsinki’s iconic open-air pool.

Curtain call

End the day with an evening at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet – because in Töölö, culture comes dressed to impress. Before the show, enjoy dinner at the romantic Carelia, and perhaps toast the night with a cocktail at Fat Lizard.

Day 3: A leisurely farewell

By now, you’ve probably fallen for Töölö’s charm. Your final day is all about soaking it all in: the calm streets, the cultural gems, and the smell of good food in the air.

A morning with Sibelius

Begin with a refreshing stroll through Sibelius Park, where the famous Sibelius Monument (dedicated to the Finnish composer) sits among pine trees and winding paths. Peaceful, poetic, and perfectly Töölö.

A sweet seaside goodbye

Stop at Café Regatta, a tiny seaside cottage café that serves up delicious cinnamon buns. Continue along the coast, breathe in the crispy Baltic air, and if it’s summer, grab a (huge) cone of ice cream from the Helsingin Jäätelötehdas kiosk. The perfect finale for your visit.

72 hours in Töölö might leave your feet tired but your heart and belly full – and your Instagram feed suspiciously chic. Don’t worry, it’ll all be here when you come back for round two.
