Vallila Helsinki neighbourhood guide
A local’s guide to things to do, sights to see & culture in Vallila Helsinki
Vallila is a vibrant neighbourhood just north of Helsinki city centre, known for its colourful wooden houses, creative energy and laid-back local atmosphere. Blending historic charm with modern urban culture, it’s a favourite among locals and a rewarding place for visitors who want to experience everyday Helsinki beyond the main attractions.
Historically a working-class district, Vallila takes its name from the Swedish Vallgård, meaning pastureland, where locals once paid a small fee to graze cows. The area later developed a mix of industry and institutions, including tannery workshops, a veterinary college and the nearby Sörnäinen Prison. These layers of history still shape Vallila’s character today.
One of Vallila’s most distinctive features is Puu-Vallila, a well-preserved wooden house district built in the early 1900s to provide affordable housing for workers. Once threatened with demolition, the area was fully refurbished in the 1980s, preserving its unique architecture.
Today, its colourful houses, quiet courtyards and leafy streets form a rare pocket of small-scale architecture close to the city centre and a much-loved symbol of the neighbourhood.

Our studio is situated in the rugged industrial zone in the former factory complex of the Orion pharmaceutical company. The most thrilling thing about the area is its tolerance and diversity. During the day, the area is buzzing with office workers and bankers, and by night the streets fill up with music and lively life from studios and workshops scattered here and there.
