János Vitéz, or János sankari (John the Valiant), is a rhymed poetic tale written in 1844 by Hungarian national poet Sándor Petőfi about János and his fabled adventures as he grows from an orphaned shepherd boy to János sankari and king of Fairyland.

The first Finnish translation of Sándor Petőfi's János vitéz was made by the distinguished Finnish poet Otto Manninen in 1926. The work received a new translation in 2023, in honour of Petőfi's bicentenary, as a poetic translation by Tuula Komsi, and a new illustration by László Herbszt. With the publication of this new work, Liszt Institute wanted to challenge others to imagine and illustrate the story of János.

The illustration challenge involved school groups, art school students and illustration workshop participants from the Liszt Institute. A total of 103 entries were received.

The illustrations of János sankari will be on display from 10.-31.5.2024
